Google announced on Oct. 30 that its Project Suncatcher prototype satellite has completed commissioning and returned what the company calls "the first-ever AI response from a data center class TPU in orbit." A TPU, or Tensor Processing Unit, is Google's custom chip for machine-learning workloads.
The prototype launched Oct. 1, 2026, on SpaceX's Transporter-18 rideshare and was built in partnership with Planet, Google said that day. Commissioning included powering up the host and TPU trays and running early machine-learning tests, the Oct. 30 post said, and TechCrunch reported the checkout took about three weeks.
During a ground-station contact, Google uplinked a prompt to its onboard Gemma 4 open model asking for a haiku about being in space. The reply came down as the satellite passed Svalbard, Norway: "Blue marble below / Data streams in silent grace / Starlight feeds my core," according to Google. The company said it also ran limericks and telemetry prompts reporting the technical status of the payload systems.
