Flight 1

It cleared the pad, but engines failed, the stages never separated, and it was destroyed four minutes in.

Failure April 20, 2023

Goal

  • Get off the pad and through the toughest part of the climb.
  • Separate the ship and fly it most of the way around the world.

What happened

Several engines failed on the way up and the two stages never separated.

The rocket tumbled and was destroyed by its self-destruct system about four minutes after launch, 39 km up.

The launch blasted a crater under the pad. SpaceX added a water-cooled steel plate before the next flight.
